A little bit of sun

Today is at least partly sunny, with temperatures reaching about 15ºF above normal.

Since I have little time today, this sunshine was the perfect excuse to jump outside and snap a few photos of the light's effect on the front garden.

Autumn Morning

I started out this morning intending to just take a few photos of the Persicaria bloomss that were just being hit by the right type of morning light...

...but I ended up snapping photos for about 30 minutes. There was so much to discover on this crisp autumn morning!

Morning Light means Color!

Today's taste of color is brought to you by the low angle of the morning sun, now arriving in my garden at a more reasonable hour, allowing me to capture more of it.

Later sunrises: another reason to love late summer (okay, early autumn) in the garden!

Let there be light!

Over the past few weeks I've been working on a project that I've planned for a while. You see, the area under my deck is pretty much wasted space, relegated to winter plant storage and shade-loving plants that I need to get out of the way. It's just too dark for anything else:

This has really been bothering me lately, so I did something about it.

Splash! Finding the Art

Last night I was preparing the photos I took recently at the Portland Japanese Garden, continuing my posts about the 2014 Garden Bloggers Fling. I wasn't with the group on what should have been the second day of the touring, but my wife and I visited a few of the destinations from the itinerary anyway -- the Japanese Garden seemed like a nice place to spend a couple of hours on this hot morning.

We coincidentally arrived at the Japanese Garden a bit after the bloggers did. We saw some of them in the garden but were several minutes behind most of the group, and we stayed here about 90 minutes -- I only point this out because I may have been in the right place at the right time to snap the photos I'm showing you today. Had I been with the group I might have missed this.

sky to me to garden

Sunday when I was finishing the bamboo planter box, the gusty winds eventually cleared away most of the clouds, wiping the gray from the day.

Sunlight and sapphire skies revealed, I couldn't help but stop and gaze upward for a while.

More morning magic

The other morning when I was trying to get nice, interesting shots of the castor bean leaves and flowers, I accidentally got artsy.

Well, not so accidentally, because I took lots of these photos. I just love letting the colors and shapes come through without all of those distracting, in-focus details.

Watch me clean: a look at the growing table (part 1)

Although it's not quite time to start seeds -- even the types that need a big head start on the season like cardoon and some other seeds that have long germination times -- my growing table is really about as messy as it can be, and I thought I should get started on it now, rather than waiting until I need it to be clean. Since there's probably nothing interesting about watching me clean a table, I'm going to turn this into the first half of a look at my setup here, as some people have asked about it.

It's a homemade two-shelf table in my basement, with the top shelf reserved for overwintering plants and the bottom shelf for starting seeds. The bottom light isn't needed yet so it stays off, so I tend to use that lower table as a "temporary" storage area. Then days, weeks, and months go by and it's completely out of control.

Late Afternoon Sunlight

The days are getting shorter, and I keep forgetting about it. I spend most of the day in a basement room that has no view of outside (no windows that is), so without going upstairs it's hard to keep track of what's going on outside. For most of the summer I'd go outside around 6 PM (or later) and walk around the garden. It's a nice way to unwind after work, and a great time to start taking photos. This last week I've been getting out there about that time and it's almost too dark already -- at least darker than I'd like.

I've been trying to remind myself to get out there earlier, while there was still plenty of light. Yesterday I finally remembered, and got a taste of the late afternoon sunshine.
