Tropical visitor?

Along with the tropical plants that I recently added to my collection came a bonus...


...of sorts. It's a snail! Why do I use an exclamation point when I write that? Surely I'm not a fan of these vegetation munching pests, am I?

Delicious crocus

As my newly-planted-last-fall crocus start to bloom (the years-old ones in the lawn have pretty much pooped out, as I got tired of leaving their foliage uncut until it withered) I've been looking pretty closely at each new bloom.


There's nothing too exciting about them, whites and yellows and purples, but I happened to notice one of the yellow ones moving in a strange way yesterday morning.

Feeling a little sluggish this morning

I was taking early morning photos of mushrooms the other day with my little camera. Its tiny size makes it perfect for mushroom photos, because I like to set it to macro mode then get the camera as low as possible to see the mushrooms from underneath. Makes it look like I'm one of the small critters that normally sees mushrooms as the towering "trees" of the jungle that is the lawn.


I actually snapped two of those "underneath" photos before I even realized that there actually was one of the small critters here already, hiding in the "bowl" of the mushroom. Many types of mushrooms start out rounded, then they flatten out, and finally curl upward, forming a bowl of sorts. I never really knew why, but now I do: to hold slugs!

Small critters of the last couple of days

When you spend a lot of time in the garden, one thing you'll start to notice (hopefully) is the abundance of wildlife that surrounds you. I'm not talking about rabbits, deer, birds and the rest. I'm talking about the small garden inhabitants and visitors: the "minor wildlife".


It amazes me how many different types of insects and other invertebrates I can see if I just look closely at almost any small part of my garden.
