Wednesday Vignette: late

Most plants look their best in spring or summer when their foliage is fresh, when they're in bloom, or something similar. Some plants might not come into their own until autumn, when their foliage puts on a show. This Sasa veitchii bamboo though, it's different.

It only gets the variegated look (from burst margin cells) once the weather turns quite cold. So after most trees have dropped their leaves and everything else has gone dormant or died, this plant is just getting going!

It's a bit how I feel these days, where things are taking so much longer and it seems that everything I do is late.

Except waking up for the bakery -- that is very early.

I really love this bamboo and would put it in other parts of my yard except it's quite difficult to get a good division. At least it's established itself in this difficult spot!

Nice that it dresses up for the winter! Do you remember the Dunkin' Donuts commercials from the 80's?

Time to make the pies!

This has always been one my favorite bamboos. Virtually impossible to grow here.
