Waking up

The garden is finally to the point where everything is waking up, and the ones that aren't stirring, well, they most likely are not coming back. My favorite tree (of those in my garden) is one of those that are slow to wake, but finally has started showing that yes, spring really is here.

I think this bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) has been in the ground for six years now (maybe seven), and for the first few years my wife and I were really worried that it had died each winter -- until we learned that it doesn't start showing green until well after everything else in the yard.

To supplement our worry, other bald cypress in the area start leafing out a couple of weeks before ours does.

Maybe ours is a little slow, but it's always worth the wait...

...the arching branches get even more wonderful fringed in frilly fronds...

If you were visiting my garden right now you'd most likely be dazzled by the emerging bamboo underneath this tree, and might not spare more than a brief glance upward...

...but we might bump into each other as we toured, as my eyes would be on the branches above.

I really love this tree all year round, but spring might be my favorite season for it!

The fresh growth looks so tactile too, inviting to be caressed. It's fascinating how some plants in the garden leaf out at a different time and rate with the same plants growing in the same area. They tend to be consistent too, as in consistently earlier or later than others year in and out.

Love bald cypress, if I had to choose a favorite tree it would be the bald cypress

I love this tree, especially in spring. What a good idea to plant the lovely yellow bamboo underneath.

The picture of the leaves in a row in front of the deep blue sky is delightful.

Lucy: I love using the sky as a backdrop when I can! :)
