One thing I learned late last summer is that although bamboo is certainly beautiful in the garden...
I thought I'd finish off the year with a look at some of my favorite photos from 2010. Since I took a lot of photos this past year -- over 6000! -- I knew I'd need some rules when choosing or else I'd end up with 100 photos in this post. So I made two rules: 1) the photo must be related to the garden 2) I had to choose exactly two photos from each month.
When the kittens were smaller I was posting weekly updates. It's been at least a month since my last update, so it's time for another look at them. They're 12 weeks old now, although these photos were taken when they were about 10 and 1/2 weeks old.
Another week has gone by, and the kittens are as energetic as ever. They've gotten much less clumsy, and can jump up on things without falling (most of the time). They're better runners now too, and can zoom around the garage without crashing into things (most of the time).
In the struggle to keep our gardens growing the way we want them, there are many "enemies" of our cause. Insects. Hail. Deer. Disease. Drought. Weeds. Wind. Wabbits -- er, I mean Rabbits.
I think it's time for another update on Super-whitey's kittens. They're just over 4 weeks old now.
After a pretty dry start to Spring in St. Louis, the rain has started coming more regularly. Thursday and Friday we had strong, gusty winds all day long, then Friday night a line of scary, severe storms came through the area -- as they did across most of the central part of the country. The worst parts of the storms missed our neighborhood but we did get a large amount of rain. This morning started out fresh and sunny though.
Early morning is my favorite time in the garden. It's quiet, dewey, and it's when you'll see some things that you probably won't get to see the rest of the day. The other morning was no exception.
It's been a few days, so let's check in on Super-whitey's kittens.
Super-whitey doesn't have as much time to follow me around the yard right now, as she's a little bit busy these days:
I've mentioned before that we have a few cats that hang out in our yard, or at least visit once in a while. I believe they're all homeless.
Let's meet these cats who apparently have good taste in gardens. ;-)
I noticed that the two 'Home Run' roses on the South side of the house are really growing actively, and it's time to chop them back a little (or a lot). Here's the first one:
When you get a few minutes after the clouds are gone, the sun starts shining, and Spring is in the air...
One bird that is always welcome in my garden is the wren. (Truthfully, all birds are welcome in my garden, except for maybe a swarm of grackles because they'll empty the bird feeder in 2 minutes.) Wrens eat harmful bugs like caterpillars, they have a really nice song, and they're pretty curious. I mainly see Carolina wrens here, but we'll get house wrens too. I think I've seen a Winter wren once or twice as well, but sometimes it's hard to tell what type of little brown bird is flitting around under the plants. You see a little motion, catch a glimpse of brown, and that's about it until it bursts out and flies away.
