Wednesday Vignette: Drama

Yesterday our state of Missouri was voting along with many others on who would be the candidates for The Election this November, and the most Super thing about this day was the weather. Temperatures of 82ºF (28ºC) made working in the yard for several hours a treat.

As early evening arrived so did this impressive cloud, catching the feel of the day so well. Bright, unusual, dramatic, and a little bit tense.

Smoke, Relax, View

These Yellowstone posts are tiring me out -- so long, so many photos to include. So I thought I'd simplify a bit today and focus on a few unrelated things from Yellowstone.

Starting with the smoke from the Alum fire as seen from Yellowstone Lake. I took several photos of these billowing beauties, and just had to share them.

Yellowstone Lake, Fishing Bridge

After the canyon and the grass garden (I mean mud volcano), we arrived Saturday at the Fishing Bridge area of Yellowstone. The campground here contains an RV park, which means we were separated from all of the tent campers and that it was essentially a parking lot surrounded by forest. We had driven over the namesake bridge on the way in, so decided to take the short hike back to it -- better than sitting around a "parking lot", right?

On the way we crossed the road and stopped at the visitor center, took a quick look out back and were delighted to find that the lake was right here -- somehow we had the impression we'd have to walk farther to see it!

Storms, 2010

Remember I don't have Internet access right now, so here's a look at one of my favorite posts from a few years ago.

I haven't been able to photograph stormclouds like this for a while. I don't know if that's a bad thing...

Finally, clouds worth watching!

It's been a long time since I've had a sunrise worth watching or photographing.

Maybe I'm just sleeping later than I used to, or not paying attention to the skies. This was a nice one though.

Catching up

When I'm out and about I typically don't have my DSLR with me, so it's down to the phone camera when I see something that needs to be snapped. Fortunately phone cameras are getting quite good, and as the old photographer adage goes "the best camera is the one you have with you", so I don't hesitate to take shots of something that interests me even a little bit.

The problem is, once they're on my phone I tend to forget about them. Only when looking for some specific old photo do I come across them and realize that I never shared. Today I'll show you a few of these.

Look up!

This past Sunday I heard a hawk calling overhead, and automatically looked up to find it. It turns out there were several hawks cavorting in the sunshine of a beautiful day, but what really held my attention was the sky.

Such interesting texture for such a thin covering of clouds -- I just had to take photos immediately, even if I only had my phone with me.

sky to me to garden

Sunday when I was finishing the bamboo planter box, the gusty winds eventually cleared away most of the clouds, wiping the gray from the day.

Sunlight and sapphire skies revealed, I couldn't help but stop and gaze upward for a while.

Favorite photos of 2011

I took a lot of photos in 2011 -- over 5300 -- and shared most of them with you in these posts. Here are some of my favorites from the past year.

January: water drops on window pane

I did this last year and I'm using the same format: picking two images from each month (or maybe three if I just can't choose). That makes sure I choose just my absolute favorites, and that the whole year gets covered. Shall we begin?

Miscellany

As happens every so often, I take photos of things that don't merit their own post. Sometimes those photos are forgotten, or intentionally ignored, but sometimes I feel the need to combine them into a "catch up" post. This is one of those posts -- a collection of unrelated recent observations.

Starting with an early morning storm. Some mornings I get to see the sunlight painting the clouds. Sometimes it's just clouds though, and these were dramatic ones.

Hey, some clouds!

If you check my posts from the last two summers you'll see that I like to post cloud photos, especially of sunsets, sunrises, and storms. I feel like I haven't done one of these posts in such a long time though, partly because I don't see the sunrises until the winter, I can only see what effect the sunset has on the clouds above and to the east, and we haven't had any storms this summer.

That's right, not one storm that produced any visually worthwhile cloud formations! We had a very dry summer, and the storms that did come through either happened at night, or missed my general area.

Sundown-touched clouds, storms away

I love clouds, and photograph any notable ones I see. You may have noticed that I post quite a few sunrise and stormcloud photos. You may not have realized that I do not typically post sunset photos. It's not that I don't like sunset clouds, it's that we can't typically see them from our house. We have no view to the west, so unless the sunset is dramatic enough to spill over into the sky directly above us, or unless conditions to the east are just right, we're not seeing anything at sundown.

Last evening the conditions were right though, as huge stormclouds to the east acted as a screen for the ruddy light of sunset, making the sky irresistible to me. Here's a taste of what I saw.

Grey

It's the start of a holiday weekend here in the US, and I am looking forward to doing a lot of different things in the garden, but I may be disappointed. I should say I may be even more disappointed, because I've actually taken a few days off work to extend the weekend, and this is pretty much what I've been seeing so far:

Yes, it's grey. Overcast, cloudy -- call it what you will, it's still grey to me. We had some nasty storms on Wednesday-- my first day off -- which not only kept me working on projects indoors, but kept me in the basement most of the afternoon. (Click here to see a slideshow of hail images from the storm. There was crazy-big hail in some parts of the city!)

Up too early, luckily

Sunday morning I woke up too early -- much, much too early. The clock said 4:00 AM, and I was wide awake. I knew this was going to be a problem later in the day so I tried for about 30 minutes to fall back asleep, but it wasn't happening. Reluctantly I got out of bed and went to the computer. Read a few blogs, perused the day's headlines, looked through some old photos, and played some computer games. After two and a half hours on the computer I got bored and hungry, so made my way upstairs.

Surprisingly, it was still quite early -- just a little after 7:00 -- and the sun was just rising. Wow, was it ever rising!

Various Nothings

As I was looking through my photo archives to find a couple of specific images, I came across a few different images that never made it into posts. I also found a few older images (from before I started the blog) that I'd like to share with you today. I'll do this from time to time, as I have a more older garden photos that are worth sharing too.

So today it's more about the images. (I did not yet find those specific images I was looking for.)

Sunrise, two-for-one

A couple of mornings ago I was awakened by hungry cats, and upon making my way to the kitchen I noticed a strong glow from the east: a particularly nice sunrise!

So I grabbed the camera and took a few shots.

Finally, some cool clouds again!

Summers in St. Louis usually bring a dozen good, strong thunderstorms or more. Strong winds, thunder, lots of lightning, and dramatic, cool clouds. This summer has been really quiet. There was that one big storm a while back, but that's about it. I was actually thinking about using some photos from last summer's storms in a post, but then things changed.

This evening a line of storms moved in, bringing cooler air, lightning, and some great clouds. Unfortunately I was out and only had my phone camera, but I think the photos turned out ok.

Monday Miscellany

It's time for another "catch up" post, where I combine all of the mini topics of the last week or so -- the things that don't deserve an entire post for themselves. I'll start with weather.

As it has been with many parts of the country, lately it's been extremely hot and dry. By "hot" I mean over 95ºF every day. By "dry" I mean very little rain. The air itself (as is typical in St. Louis) is not dry -- it's quite humid, so the combination of heat and humidity means small, strong thunderstorm cells pop up almost every afternoon and move through the area.

Another storm

So apparently my post about clouds the other day has sort of jinxed us, as another strong band of storms came through again today, following up yesterday's dramatic weather.

A few years ago when I still had all of the black locust trees in the yard these types of storms would really have me worried, as I've seen too many locusts blow down over the past 15 years or so. Now I'm not too worried as there are just a couple of trees left to fall, and they probably wouldn't hit the house too hard -- they'd just sort of lean onto it (I hope).

So I get to just enjoy the drama of the storm: the gusty winds, the ever-changing clouds.

Bamboo dig rained out

As I mentioned at the end of yesterday's post, this morning I'd be going to Mike's to help him dig and pot some more bamboo. It was a cloudy morning so I checked the weather websites and they said "hot and humid with thunderstorms mainly after 1 PM". Hmmm. A look at the radar showed a line of heavy storms moving toward us, but according to the forecast it wouldn't be getting here for several hours. Seemed wrong but I believed it, loaded up the truck, and started driving.

A few minutes later I noticed the angry sky.
