Kittens, 2010

Without Internet access, I'm doing a few posts from back in the early days of this blog, some of my favorites.

It's impossible not to include one of the kitten posts, as every garden needs a little bit of fuzzy to complement the greenery, rocks, and wood, right?

Favorite photos of 2010

I thought I'd finish off the year with a look at some of my favorite photos from 2010. Since I took a lot of photos this past year -- over 6000! -- I knew I'd need some rules when choosing or else I'd end up with 100 photos in this post. So I made two rules: 1) the photo must be related to the garden  2) I had to choose exactly two photos from each month.

It was pretty difficult to find two good photos from January and February (before I started this blog), and it was even harder to pick only two images from May, June, July and a couple of other months, but I stuck to it. Most of these photos have appeared in the blog, but some may have not.

Edit: I missed a month and had some mislabeled -- fixed now.

Tiny Whitey gets a name and a home

If you weren't reading my blog in April, you may not know that I have a partially-adopted stray cat (Super Whitey) living in my garage, and that she had two kittens in April. They also live in my garage. I sure do wish I could use my garage for garagey stuff, like parking cars. Today we took a significant step toward that goal, as one of the kittens found a home at 4 1/2 months old.

As is customary in our house, stray cats only get descriptive names until they are adopted. Since Tiny Whitey went to her new home, she's now called "Luna".

Overdue kitten update

When the kittens were smaller I was posting weekly updates. It's been at least a month since my last update, so it's time for another look at them. They're 12 weeks old now, although these photos were taken when they were about 10 and 1/2 weeks old.

That's Tiny Whitey (the kitten), not Super-Whitey (the mom). She likes to cuddle, but is also extremely energetic. I think that besides getting Mom's coloring, she also got her hunter's senses.

I have to admit that one of the reasons I haven't posted an update lately is that it's really difficult to get good photos of them now.

Kitten update: 8 weeks

The kittens are two months old now, and starting to lose some of their kittenocity. (I tried "kittenness" and "kittenliness", but decided on "kittenocity".) Still incredibly cute though!

Tiny whitey just can't stay away from the bamboo.

Kitten update: 7 weeks

Another week has gone by, and the kittens are as energetic as ever. They've gotten much less clumsy, and can jump up on things without falling (most of the time). They're better runners now too, and can zoom around the garage without crashing into things (most of the time).

They've been spending the last few days in the garage though, since their mom (Super-whitey) is really interested in the boy cat (Whitey) that hangs around outside. Not sure what I'm going to do about that situation yet...

Kitten update: 6 weeks

Tiny toe and Tiny whitey are just over 6 weeks old now, and they're fast! Little bundles of go-go-go! Last week I said all they did was chase each other and wrestle. They still do that, but with a lot more energy.

There's more pouncing, running, and jumping now. They're eating solid food -- not sure if they're nursing anymore, but I better find out and give them a mid-day feeding if they're not.

Kitten update: 5 weeks

Chasing and wrestling. That's about all the kittens do now -- chase and attack each other. They're not completely stable on their feet, so it leads to some hilarious situations.

Tiny toe is losing his meekness, but his sister still seems to be a little more physically advanced. He's catching up though.

Kitten update: 4 weeks

I think it's time for another update on Super-whitey's kittens. They're just over 4 weeks old now.

Walking and squeaking is about all they do right now.

A bird and two kittens

If you're like me at all, the garden isn't a garden unless it's full of birds. Well, not "full" because you need some room for plants, but there must be birds around. They add an extra sense of life to a garden, they eat insects, they sing for us, and amuse us with their antics (sometimes). There's also the excitement of seeing a species that you don't recognize, perhaps something that is only seen in your area while migrating, or is very hard to catch a glimpse of.

Sometimes the only chance you get to see these rarer birds is when something tragic happens, as with this Indigo Bunting that apparently flew into one of our windows.

Trying to get comfortable

It's been a few days, so let's check in on Super-whitey's kittens.

They're moving around a lot more now, and they each have one eye open. They still sleep most of the time, but it seems to take them a while to get settled.

Kittens!

Super-whitey doesn't have as much time to follow me around the yard right now, as she's a little bit busy these days:

Yes, we now have a couple of kittens! (They're about 2 days old in this photo.)
