New sculptures

I've been working on some new garden sculpture designs, sticking to my current focus of mixing wooden cubes with metal rods.

This is a variation on the earlier work, and I call this one "Quad Cubes Z".

Garden sculptures, for you?

Well, it has taken a little while, but the "cube" series of garden sculptures that I've been working on are finally available...

That's right, you can now purchase these for your own garden from my Etsy shop!

Not enough curves

I realized something this morning when looking out the bedroom window over the garden.

I don't have enough curves out there. Something bold that catches the eye yet harmonizes with the surrounding plants and structures.

Wonderful rusted metal!

I visited my mother in Chicago again this weekend and brought her some more plants for her garden. The surprise though was that I came home with something for my garden. An old, rusty, wonderful fire hydrant!

It was in her garage, ready to be recycled as scrap. "Can I have it for my garden?" I asked my brother. "Of course!" he said. Since he's turning into a plant person and has seen my garden via my blog, did he know it would look great surrounded by greenery? Did he not envision it but trusted my judgement?

Citygarden

Yesterday morning after a great breakfast in downtown St. Louis my wife and I drove past Citygarden. Sitting at the stoplight with the highway onramp visible directly in front of us, we decided that a stroll around a garden that neither of us had set foot in before would be a good thing.

We both knew that Citygarden was only a few years old, contained sculptures, fountains, and plants, but that's about it. Sure we had seen photos of some of its features, but that's not the same thing, is it?

Zick's Great Outdoors!

Today I continue my series on St. Louis area nursery visits, with a look at a place that is unlike any other around here: Zick's Great Outdoors. This was only my second visit ever to Zick's with the first being at least five years ago. I'm not sure how we ever found this place back then, but I think it was from an interesting and creative ad in a local paper.

Whereas the other nurseries that I've visited before were either close to my house (Wiethop, Sherwoods, Greenscape) or a bit to the east (Sugar Creek), Zick's is out west in Wildwood. Remember when I visited Rockwoods Reservation earlier this year? That's in Wildwood too -- it really is quite "wild" out there. So do you want to see why I added an exclamation point to the title of this post? Keep reading...

Portland: Ernst/Fuller gardens (part 2)

Yesterday I looked at the Fuller half of this neighboring garden pair -- today I'll look at the Ernst half. If you remember, I left off last post at the door separating the two back yards.

Here I start by viewing that door from the other side, looking back somewhat into Joanne's garden that I just left. Linda's backyard space seemed much brighter if I remember correctly -- it's amazing how one big tree in the right (wrong?) spot can change a garden from shady to sunny (or is it the other way around?)

Portland: Ernst/Fuller gardens

Sunday on last month's Garden Bloggers Fling in Portland started with a visit to two neighboring gardens that actually connect -- each garden has its own personality, but each spills into the other a bit. These are the gardens of friends and neighbors Joanne Fuller and Linda Ernst.

As the bus emptied, most people went for the garden on the right (Linda's), so I went toward the other (Joanne's). An overcast morning made the shady front yard extra dark, but I managed to capture many of the great details: furniture, sculpture, pottery -- so much to take in!
