The Fabulous Color of Japanese Maples

Ah, that wonderful, colorful foliage of japanese maples: browns and yellows and reds. Is there a better tree for autumn color?

Oh wait, it's only June.

Some Autumn Color

The leaves have mostly all fallen now, but a week or two ago there were some great splashes of color in my garden. In fact, it seemed to me that the entire St. Louis area was more colorful this fall than it has been for a while. Very nice while it lasted.

I thought this Japanese maple was a "coral bark" maple, but the trunk is mainly green and brown now. The leaves are the last of my Acers to turn, and they're a wonderful orange-pinkish color.

Winter color

Just some color that I noticed today in the garden.

It was a bit warmer so I spent a few minutes walking around. Not as much fun as in spring, but the garden is still quite enjoyable.

Whites and Pinks

Just whites and pinks today...

...with a little bit of creative liberty on the definitions of both colors.

Introducing: Druhm

The third in my geometric stool/table series is now here: Druhm!

Whorn is cube-like, Trang is triangular, and Druhm is cylindrical. This one was fun to make!

Shapes and Patterns

I'm in a shapes and patterns mood today.

So just photos of lines and circles and related from around the garden, all visible from inside the warm house (with a telephoto lens).

Sunrise

We had a fantastic sunrise yesterday morning, so I thought I'd share it with you.

Not much that I need to say about it, is there?

A little bit of sun

Today is at least partly sunny, with temperatures reaching about 15ºF above normal.

Since I have little time today, this sunshine was the perfect excuse to jump outside and snap a few photos of the light's effect on the front garden.

Cold-damaged, but pretty

I always have mixed emotions about going out into the garden after the first hard freeze -- and we had a hard one on Saturday. After previous lows that just barely dipped to freezing or a degree (F) below, it was 19ºF (-7ºC) Sunday morning when I awoke.

The tender plants turn to mush with those temps, and at first I hate the sight of their droopy, clearly dead leaves. But then I start looking more closely and realize that even this weather-murdered foliage is still quite beautiful.

One last look: castor beans

With the first hard freeze expected Saturday evening, I thought give you one last look at the stars of my late-season garden: the castor beans (Ricinus communis).

Also papyrus and a little canna, because they also impressed me so much this year. I'm glad that I was able to enjoy them until almost the end of November (an extra three or four weeks this year), but I'll miss them for the next nine months or so -- the castor beans won't be impressive until late July at the earliest.

Why color, now?

For most of us, autumn means color. We look for it, remark on it, share it. Why is color so important to us, especially at this time of year?

Is it that we know that it could be the last chance to see this vibrance before the reduced palette of winter sets in?

Autumn Morning

I started out this morning intending to just take a few photos of the Persicaria bloomss that were just being hit by the right type of morning light...

...but I ended up snapping photos for about 30 minutes. There was so much to discover on this crisp autumn morning!

Getting started...

I got started on several larger projects over the past four days or so, and none of them is finished enough to really give you a good look at them.

So today just a couple of peeks at what's going on.

For the Hummingbirds

I admit that I haven't been filling the hummingbird feeder recently. I know it's completely dry, as it's probably been at least three weeks since I've touched it... probably more like 4 or 5. Since the hummingbirds are just about to leave for Mexico, or have already done so, it's critical that my garden provide them with fuel.

Luckily there are plenty of plants for them to fight over right now -- the feeder is not the only place they can sip nectar. The cannas -- plain green form with the bright red blooms -- are a big hit with them right now. I have three separate plantings whose fiery flowers are towering above everything -- easy for hummers to find!

Morning Light means Color!

Today's taste of color is brought to you by the low angle of the morning sun, now arriving in my garden at a more reasonable hour, allowing me to capture more of it.

Later sunrises: another reason to love late summer (okay, early autumn) in the garden!

Wednesday Vignette: Orange from two sides

My first Wednesday Vignette post -- a meme hosted by Anna at Flutter and Hum -- takes a look at the most vibrant color in my front garden right now: orange!

The interesting thing is that both plants producing orange blooms (Canna 'Tropicanna' and Lion's Tail) are just outside the front door. If you stand in the right place, it's possible to see both of them at the same time!

Projects update: chair and screen

A while back I showed you a couple of projects that I had started: refurbishing my patio chairs, and using an old shower door to create a garden screen. Both of those projects were not quite finished, as the chair needed a stain or protection of some kind, and the screen needed to similarly be protected and also installed.

I couldn't have it just leaning against my house, blocking my garage door forever. So this past weekend I tackled both projects, completing both!

Looking again

A month ago on a morning walk to the nearby supermarket I noticed that the wild hill next to the highway -- where I've released many a captured mouse and mole -- looked quite beautiful. Great texture and color as there were large swathes of blooms. So nice!

I only had my phone with me but snapped some photos anyway. Needless to say that the images captured did not impress me, and I left them to be forgotten. Today though I took another look, processed the heck out of them to try and restore some of the "magic" that I saw that morning, and am now sharing with you.
