A little game after the rain

Let's play a little game, okay? I'll show you a photo, and you just have to tell me if it's 1) a water feature or 2) a problem caused by a week of rain.

These photos are all from a couple of weeks ago, around Feb 25 after several days of rain. I think we got 5" (13cm) or so total over a few days.

Flop, or more like smash

I have a problem with drooping, floppy plants right now. Everything was fine until the rains started last weekend -- three weeks or more of dry weather makes you forget what "fun" midwest storms can be for a gardener. Everybody growing upright, a bit dry but otherwise happy. Until the rain.

Yesterday things got even more exciting, as two storm fronts collided in the area and made for some tumultuous weather. We were on the road somewhere close to historic Hannibal Missouri (boyhood home of Mark Twain) when things got scary as shown above. Lots of wind and heavy rain on a winding, hilly country highway, although we were keeping an eye out for debris too.

Rain

So much of the country is having a bad time with extreme weather, it seems wrong to complain about our own weather here in St. Louis. No blizzards, tornadoes, or anything else violent, but we have been getting more than our fair share of rain.

It's been raining pretty much non-stop since Christmas day afternoon, when we had quite heavy storms -- the dry creekbed on the south side of the house will get a makeover this summer, letting it carry much more water. Or maybe there's another solution. I enjoy spreading pretty river gravel around, but carrying it up from the bottom of the hill more than once every year is getting old.

Dry summer, wet fall

Summer was fairly dry in St. Louis, as my water bills will indicate -- there was much hose dragging around a few months ago. Now though, things have changed. Since September 1 we are something like 8" above our normal rainfall amount.

I've spent very little time in the garden recently because of this -- it's always raining! A few dry days are forecast starting this afternoon they say, so this morning was a good time to take a look at the damp.

Weather!

Yesterday was a weird weather day for much of the middle of the country. Here in St. Louis it was unexpectedly warm, the temperature of 72ºF (22ºC) at least 10ºF higher than forecast, and wow, was it windy!

Then around 3PM a line of strong thunderstorms moved in and a torrent of rain came down. This is the type of thing my garden needed last summer but never got. Strange to be seeing it in February.

All Better Now?

Well, it seems all of my worry about the bamboo leaves all dying or even having the culms die was completely unfounded.

Everything is fine now! No rolled leaves, no dry, papery look. Maybe the color is off a bit, but that's to be expected. Glad to see the plants are all better now... or are they?

Unseasonable

You know you're in for an interesting day when you open the front door at 7:00 AM and outside is warmer than in, and almost hot, humid air rushes into the house. It was 70ºF (21ºC) at that time, and I knew two things: first that I was going to take advantage of the warmth to get more garden tasks finished, and second that it was probably going to storm.

As the morning progressed, the winds picked up, and closer to noon when the temperature was a record high 80ºF (27ºC), the storms hit. Rain! Good, hard, soaking rain, and it wasn't going to miss us this time!

Wet weekend

I didn't think the rain was ever going to stop! The prospect of a weekend in the garden after a few days of rain turned into a Saturday watching TV and a Sunday working in the wetness.

Still, a moist garden in spring is such a nice thing -- it can be so beautiful!

April Showers

April has always been the pivotal Spring month where I've lived, warming up and seeing everything start to waken. The saying "April showers bring May flowers" is always in my head when it rains.

It's certainly been raining a lot here in St. Louis lately -- we've gotten over 3" (8cm) over the last few days. Incidentally, that tub is a recent garage sale find. I was thinking of using it for a small water feature -- I may want to move it into place now and just let the rain fill it up.

It's, it's... wet!!

The remnants of hurricane Isaac hit the Midwest this weekend, and here in St. Louis we've had a couple of days of on again, off again showers -- often heavy. For the first time since probably the start of June I have a seriously wet garden.

I mean just soaked. The ground is soft, actually moving a bit when you walk on it. I couldn't resist taking photos of the wonderful wetness yesterday morning.

Ahhhhh

We finally some relief from the drought. I think this is the first morning this summer that I had to cancel garden plans because of rain!

It started as a very light sprinkle in the morning, and I didn't get excited because this happens every week or so and ends up being nothing. Today though was different, as the rain kept building.

Rain!

After at least six weeks of no significant rainfall in my yard -- possibly much longer but I'm afraid to research -- we finally got rain! It started early in the morning with thunderstorms, then it rained steadily pretty much the entire day.

The ground got a deep soaking, the temperature really dropped, and everything was still wet the next morning.

Wet!

The last two nights we've had some good, hard rains in St. Louis. By my measurements it's been about 2 1/2 inches total, which is a very nice soaking for two days. The nice thing about storms that pass through in the night is that the garden gets watered, but the day can still be nice and sunny and dry.

Well, the morning is pretty wet. Ok, very wet. Totally soaking, dripping, sopping wet. That's good news for me though, because a wet garden lit by the early morning sun is a great time to take photos. I took a bunch this morning, and here they are.

The rain returns

After only a day and a half of sunshine, the clouds returned yesterday afternoon, and the rain started up again as soon as it got dark. So today there's nothing to do but watch the garden through rain-spotted windows.

My list of garden chores grows and grows, yet all I was able to do during our brief dry spell was mow the lawn. At least I was able to do that much.

Rain, rain, rain, rain.

Another grey, wet morning, as the rain defeats my weekend gardening plans again. Over the past week it's rained on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and now Sunday. Looks like more rain forecast for tomorrow too.

But most of my plants love the rain (except for the Plumeria cuttings I potted recently -- they need to stay on the dry side until they root) so I don't mind too much.
