Two beauties

A quick look at two of springtime's beauties in my garden, one just peaking, the other slightly past its prime.

The honeysuckle vine, permanently entwined with the basketball hoop pole is about as dramatic as anything else I grow when in bloom. The ninebark with its dark foliage I think of as more subdued, but maybe that's not the case. It's certainly making an impact right now!

Making more space, permanence

I realized something late last week: my walkway planting beds need to be wider. They also need more permanence, or year-round interest, as they're quite barren in the winter.

So I decided to do a little turf removal, some plant shopping, and I think I did something good.

A quick pruning

Too little time and too many projects in the garden this weekend left me working rather than documenting, so  -- and what I was doing was rather boring stuff anyway: potting up some plants, tucking another plant into an existing bed, weeding.

Oh, and pruning -- both underground of bamboo rhizomes and above ground of shrubs. Here's a quick look at the ninebark.

New Ninebark

You probably don't remember, but last fall I picked up a new ninebark on clearance.

I already had a large ninebark in my garden and don't really know where I'll put another one, but I couldn't pass up the $10 price tag. The one shown above is my existing plant 'Summer Wine', whose deep, dark colors I love. The new one though...

Tip: season-end plant sales

If your garden needs more plants -- and whose doesn't -- you really need to take advantage of plant sales. There are typically two times of the year when the nurseries near me start reducing prices: mid-summer, and mid-fall.

Mid-summer plant shopping is not fun, as the oppressive heat and humidity makes browsing plants an uncomfortable experience, but fall sales are another thing entirely. I've been visiting local nurseries in the cool/cold weather lately looking for bargains, and I've found a few recently.

Ninebark blooms nicely

One of the sights I returned to after my recent trip (besides the knee-high lawn) was the ninebark.

This is probably the best-looking shrub in my yard year-round, but in mid-spring it really impresses with its blooms.

Little flowers give me big smile

I wanted to take some more photos of my sempervivum flowers before they all faded, to show the variety in the blooms. After a few shots though, I realized their differences were subtle.

Perhaps too subtle to monopolize a post, so I found several other small blooms around my garden and included those too. Very few words today.

Pruning the monster

My ninebark is one of the most striking plants in my garden. You can see why here. The trouble is, although the tag says that it will be 4-5' tall and 4-5' wide, it's bigger than that. Much bigger.

Today it's time to get it back under control.

Bring me a shrubbery!

I'll have to admit that shrubs are not something that I've spent a lot of time thinking about. I really don't think "hey, what this bed needs is a nice shrub!". My buying strategy for shrubs is the same as for most of my other plants too: if it looks like a cool plant, get it! Decide what to do with it later.

So I'll get something cool, like this Viburnun sargentii 'Onondaga', keep it in a pot for a year or two (unless it's too big already), then decide where to put it.
