Since we're squarely in Winter's grasp now, it seems a great time to look back four to six weeks to appreciate the end of summer 2019.

Whenever snow is forecast I still get excited! I love the way everything looks under fresh snow, but I especially like bamboos in the snow.
In going back through old posts for yesterday's long overdue favorite photos of 2012 post, I saw some things that I really liked. This blog was partially going to be a garden "diary" and it's proving its worth in that regard -- I never would have remembered when that heavy snow was, or a particular ice storm, or that exceptionally hot summer (they all blur after a few years).
This weekend brought us our first real proof of winter in St. Louis, mild temperatures driven out as the Arctic air pushed in.
Outdoors it's mostly winter, with more snow this past weekend, and some cold temperatures.
Still cold here, and getting colder (tonight's low is forecast to be 13ºF/-10ºC). The big surprise though was snow yesterday.
One thing you can't deny about our recent snow and dangerously cold weather: it makes for some beautiful mornings!
After a couple of really mild winters, we're back to a "normal" winter in St. Louis, with alternating periods of warm and cold weather and snow. Temperatures over the last couple of days were in the mid-40's F, but forecast lows in the next few days could reach -5ºF (-20ºC) or lower.
One of my favorite things about having snow on the ground is being able to see the tracks of whatever creatures visit. When I first moved here about 20 years ago, seeing deer tracks in the snow was exciting. Deer sightings were a rare event.
The snow certainly is pretty, but the 4" (10cm) or so we received Friday night is heavy! It started as rain then turned to snow as the temperature dropped.
Awoke this morning expecting it to be cold, and was not disappointed. About 10ºF (-12ºC), which makes it the coldest morning of the winter so far.
That's the sound of spring arriving in my St. Louis garden this year, in the form of several inches of heavy snow. Yes, it makes everything so beautiful, but what about the crocus that were blooming?
Yesterday was a lovely spring day and I spent it in the garden digging, cleaning up, building things. Today though winter returns to St. Louis, as the snow has just started falling.
It's been quite wintery in St. Louis the past few weeks -- as it has been over large parts of this country. Temperatures have been much lower than normal (except for a few days here and there), and we've had a bit of snow.
There was a chance of snow last night, with accumulations of up to 1" (2.5cm) expected -- in St. Louis that really means "it's not going to snow". They were a little off in their estimate.
One of the best things about a little snow on barren ground is seeing the tracks that are left by various creatures.
Just quick but heartfelt wishes for a year full of adventure, discovery, and happiness! (Hopefully lots of gardening too of course.)
