Finding Ferns

The area underneath my deck was once wasted space, nothing growing there. Over the past few years I've been converting it to a fern bed, and it's been doing well.

Yesterday I discovered something that's got me even more excited about this area. First though, let's take a look at the ferns here.

While out shopping

I was out at some of the local nurseries this past weekend (Greenscape Gardens, Sherwood's Forest, Wiethop Greenhouses) looking for some seed packets, and saw a few "interesting" things. Yes I saw loads of great plants, but the cool plants are not the focus of this post.

I'll start with another weird thing seen at The Home Depot where I wasn't looking for plants. They always have something that makes me ask "why?" like the painted cactus, or the growable pods, and this was another to add to the list: plants in a can!

Moist and Ferny Spring Things

After weeks of difficulty in finding worthwhile topics to post about in late winter, spring throws topics at me several times each day. Nursery visits, outdoor adventures, emerging plants, springtime wildlife -- so much going on! So we'll start this week with photos taken last week after a rain.

Fern fronds: these may grab you

I guess it's certain now: Spring is here in St. Louis. We've got a little bit of colder weather coming this weekend, but it won't get below freezing. In fact today will be near 80ºF (26ºC) and mostly dry so I'll be out there continuing with spring cleanup. First though a break to enjoy some of Spring's goodness: fern fronds unfurling!

These are from my tassel fern (am I right about that? I can't find the plant tag...) which stayed green all winter. I suppose that means that I shouldn't be surprised that it's the first fern to put out new fronds, but I was when I saw them yesterday. I mean, it's only mid-March!

Small bed no longer ignored

Saturday morning I went to visit my gardener friend Mike. He had some clay pots that he wanted to give to a "good home", and had a few plants that he wanted help digging and dividing. So after loading about two dozen pots of various sizes into the truck cab I started digging ostrich ferns (Matteuccia struthiopteris) which he wanted to reduce and relocate. With Mike's generosity I ended up with ten or eleven good-sized ferns -- more than I expected -- so I had to look for another place to plant some.

I had been thinking about planting ostrich ferns here next to the patio, and had even purchased a small specimen earlier this year (in the black pot). I'm glad I never planted that one, as it's still so young compared to what I dug. This bed is just weeds right now, so seems perfect for a makeover.
