Rescue surprise!

It seems every year we're rescuing some bird from a gutter downspout. Yesterday as I was putting dinner onto plates I heard that telltale scrabbling again, the sound of tiny claws on sheet metal.


So I grabbed my tools and started disassembling the downspout. This one was right next to the deck so all of it was easy to reach, even without a ladder.

Trapped, then untrapped

A few days ago I noticed that there was a rabbit in my much-neglected fenced veggie garden. This didn't bother me, as there's really nothing in there that I'd care about him eating. Maybe the kale. Tomatoes? Rabbits don't eat those. There's some poison ivy growing in there that I keep forgetting about... maybe he'll eat that.


He got in because my gate has virtually disintegrated, and was pushed open about 8" at the bottom. At least I assume that's how he got in. Today though I noticed that he was still in there, and was throwing himself against the chicken wire fencing. Not injuring himself, but pretty frantic. It got me worried.

Everybody loves clover!

Like many other non-lawn-obsessed gardeners (in other words, "normal people") white clover makes up a good portion of my lawn. Fortunately I like the way a good patch of clover leaves look, and love having the little white flowers everywhere.


Pretty much everybody else who visits my yard loves the clover too, but I'm not talking about human visitors. I'm talking about the four and six-legged visitors.

Keeping one enemy at bay

In the struggle to keep our gardens growing the way we want them, there are many "enemies" of our cause.  Insects. Hail. Deer. Disease. Drought. Weeds. Wind. Wabbits -- er, I mean Rabbits.


When my garden was smaller, rabbits were the number one problem I had. These are a couple that are hunkered down in my neighbor's yard.
