So slow, whatever they are.

This is probably the most frustrating planting of my garden this year. Why frustrating? Well, I planted these seeds back in May -- or maybe even April. They took a while to germinate, but then grew oh so slowly.

They've only now started putting on some size, and it's been so long since I planted I don't remember exactly what they are.

I'm pretty sure they're parsnips. I have no idea why they've been growing at a snail's pace until recently when they've actually started moving along.

I've not grown parsnips before, so don't know what they look like when young. Is this what they look like?

I do know that parsnips do take some time to mature, and I'm pretty sure there's not enough time left in our growing season for that.

So I've been caring for these little seedlings all summer long for no reason really.

There's always next year, right?

I've never grown parsnip but I can't believe this is so slow. The plants look very healthy, so I assume they got regular water?

I can't offer you any wise answers, but I do like the photos.

They look like parsnips to me. I was wondering why you were growing them in a pot, Alan.
Our seeds get sown in drills in the veg garden. As root veg they probably don't like being disturbed. Ours were own in late March to early April and will not be ready for eating until the autumn but they are a quite a bit bigger then yours. I think you; re right and should try again next year, in cool (!) drills, if you have the space.

I don't have loose enough soil for good root veggies. I've also not heard the term "drills" before, although I suspect that it may get too hot here for parsnips no matter where I plant them.

An update: I was out of town for a few days, and something nibbled most of the leaves off of these parsnips. It was not meant to be this year I guess.
